Job Description

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

We are seeking a highly motivated, proactive and organised scientist to assist the Project Manager and Curator in the management of our large scale mutant mouse research programme. The successful candidate will be expected to receive, monitor and progress registered expressions of interest in the programme (internal and external), answer queries and champion gene lists with specific biological significance to be adopted into the WTSI mouse production and analysis pipelines. The position requires the ability to multitask, manage competing priorities and meet frequent deadlines. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills with the ability to develop strong collaborative relationships with other colleagues at the Institute and the wider scientific community.

Essential Skills BSc or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Mammalian Genetics or a related biological discipline. Excellent administrative, organisational, communication and multitasking skills. A practical approach to problem solving, good IT skills and use of office technologies such as MS Office applications. Sensitivity to confidential information.

Ideal Skills Previous experience in using databases. A broad knowledge of modern biological sciences from the molecular level to the functional analysis of genes in mammals. Bioinformatics skills and experience working in the biotechnology industry are highly desirable.

Other information With the completion of the human and mouse genome sequences, attention has now turned to the functional analysis of mammalian genes. Our large scale gene targeting project aims to create a public resource of thousands of conditional mutations in mouse embryonic stem cells through the use of high-throughput recombineering based gene targeting technology. The WTSI Mouse Genetics Programme (MGP) generates mutant mouse lines from these resources in an effort by the institute to identify new genes that are critical for normal mammalian development and generate mouse models for human disease. The MGP is aiming to generate and phenotype up to 500 lines per year. Data and mutants will be made available to the scientific community.

Benefits The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
