The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Scientific Administrator will work as part of the Science Administration team. The team provides professional support to the Institute's scientific faculty in the areas of pre-award grant administration and contract negotiation, development of scientific and corporate policy, provision of advice on regulatory standards and production of corporate documents and reports.
The primary function of this role is to provide scientific administrative support to the Board of Management and Faculty and to facilitate the Institute's decision-making and communication processes. You will provide comprehensive executive support to a number of the Institute’s management and scientific committees and co-ordinate the timely production of corporate documents and management reports.
You will organise the Institute’s seminar programmes, in liaison with the Seminar Committee, and manage the core facility review programme working closely with the Institute’s Research Administrator network. You will also organise Institute-wide events such as Town Meetings and the annual open day for staff.
Essential Skills
Candidates should have a biological science degree (or equivalent) and experience of a similar role in a science or research based organisation or be looking to use their scientific background in a research management role.
As an excellent communicator you will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with senior scientific staff and other colleagues, both orally and in writing. The ability to negotiate, persuade and influence others to ensure the timely completion of tasks will be essential to the success of this role.
You will have experience of a variety of management and scientific committees and an understanding of the role of the committee secretary.
The ability to prioritize and plan your own workload and the ability to multi-task will be a prerequisite.
Ideal Skills
Experience of working "at the bench" in a research organisation would be an advantage.
