Job Description

Our client, based in Cambridge is seeking a Technical Lead-Fluid Mechanics. The successful candidate will be a fluid / thermodynamics engineer or physicist, with excellent mathematical and practical skills.

You will also have an excellent degree in Physics or a related Engineering discipline.

To provide a significant contribution to major development projects in a technical lead role focussed in the areas of applied fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The position will involve solving difficult technical problems using a combination of numerical methods, mathematical modelling, experimental techniques and analytical tools. You will work within multi-disciplinary teams of highly talented people to develop world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.

Type of work undertaken by the division

The Medical Technology Division undertakes the development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.

The Division's activities fall into three focus area:

* Drug Delivery Devices

* Surgical and Interventional Products

* Medical Diagnostics and Instrumentation

Specific responsibilities

The position involves taking a lead role within development projects with exposure to all aspects of development from concept creation to final product delivery. You will be involved in organising and progressing the analytical engineering effort to meet the requirements of the project as well as providing creative solutions to fluids and thermodynamic problems.

You will use your strong technology expertise to develop relationships with current and future clients by understanding their needs, writing proposals to define the work programmes, holding technical workshops and presenting data. You will provide a technical point of contact within the company for clients. You will manage tasks within projects requiring delivery within tight timescales and budgets, managing both internal and external resources.

You will be involved with hands-on product development and design of complex electro-mechanical systems. Your strong creative, mathematical and experimental skills should allow you to make a significant contribution to development projects and to participate in consultancy work within client companies. You will also be required to oversee and advise on implementation by less experienced engineers.

Particular areas of focus may include aerosolisation of powders and liquids, fluid flow and mixing, heat transfer modelling, materials science and electrostatics. You will apply your specialism to a diverse range of problems and projects.

You will work closely with business developers to promote the technical capabilities of the business.

Your specific responsibilities are likely to include:* Leading teams of Technologists/Engineers to develop high integrity complex systems for medical devices.

* Undertaking or leading numerical or CFD analyses of concepts and solutions.

* Developing novel solutions to complex fluid mechanics and thermodynamic problems.

* Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation.

* Preparing technical programmes of work.

* Presenting findings to internal and external clients.

* Development of internally funded, novel technologies and presentation at scientific conferences.

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will be a talented, creative, fluid / thermodynamics engineer or physicist, with excellent mathematical and practical skills. You will be able to demonstrate your ability to challenge the status quo in your technical field and make a significant contribution to the advancement of technology in a commercial environment.

You will have an excellent degree in Physics or a related Engineering discipline.

Significant relevant post graduate industrial experience is essential. We are interested to hear how your skills and experience can help us to resolve the challenges faced during the development of complex medical devices and systems. Specific medical device industry experience is not a requirement although experience of working within a regulated development environment will be advantageous.

A post-graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience would also be advantageous.

You will be a team player with the ability to supervise the work of others and to mentor less experienced staff. Good communication skills are essential as a major part of your role will be interacting with clients and multi-disciplinary project teams made up of scientists, engineers and designers.
